Advantage+ vs manual Meta campaigns: how to decide

How to choose between Meta Advantage+ and manual campaigns based on catalogue size, creative volume, conversion volume and what you need to report.

Advantage+ vs manual Meta campaigns: how to decide

Short answer: Choose Advantage+ if you sell many products from a catalogue, can add new creatives every few weeks and judge results on total revenue. Choose manual campaigns if you sell a few products or a service, get only a few conversions per week, target one small market, or must report which audience and placement brought each sale. Many shops run both.

What is the real difference between Advantage+ and manual campaigns?

In a manual campaign you build the structure yourself. You choose the audience for each ad set, the placements, how the budget is split and which creatives go where. You get control and reports you can read. You also pay for every wrong guess.

In an Advantage+ campaign, Meta makes most of those decisions. You supply the conversion goal, country, budget, creatives and usually a product catalogue. The system decides who sees which ad and where. Your job changes from targeting to giving it good inputs.

You don’t have to pick all or nothing. Meta also offers individual Advantage+ settings, such as automated audience or placements, inside a campaign you otherwise build by hand. Names and options change often. Before you plan around a specific setting, check what your own ad account shows and what the Meta Business Help Centre says.

Which factors should decide it?

Ignore what worked for a US brand with an audience ten times bigger than yours. Look at your own inputs. I go through the table below before I recommend either setup.

FactorLeans to Advantage+Leans to manual
Catalogue sizeDozens or hundreds of products with a clean product feedOne product, a short range or a service
Creative volumeYou can add new images and videos every few weeksA handful of ads that rarely change
Conversion volumeSteady purchases from Meta traffic every weekA few sales or leads per week
Market sizeSeveral countries or one large countryOne small market or a narrow B2B niche
Reporting needsTotal revenue and blended return are enoughYou must report by audience, placement or country budget
MarginsSimilar margins across productsLarge margin differences you need to steer yourself
TrackingPixel plus Conversions API, values sent without VATBrowser Pixel only, many events lost to consent (fix this first either way)

If most of your answers fall in one column, you have your answer. If they split, run a hybrid: one automated campaign to find new customers and a small manual layer for the things you need to control or report.

How to test Advantage+ against manual step by step

First, decide which number you will judge

ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend. Your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your gross margin. Say your margin after product cost, shipping and payment fees is 40%. Break-even ROAS is then 1 / 0.4 = 2.5, so every euro of ad spend has to bring at least €2.50 of revenue without VAT.

Also track MER (marketing efficiency ratio): total shop revenue divided by total marketing spend across all channels. If ROAS in Ads Manager rises but MER stays flat, the campaign is claiming sales that would have happened anyway.

Then run the test

  1. Fix tracking first. Use the Pixel plus the Conversions API (CAPI, events sent from your server), deduplicated with an event ID, and send purchase values without VAT. In the EU, consent banners block many browser events, and that leaves the algorithm with gaps.
  2. Upload your customer list. If your account lets you, mark it as existing customers so reports show new and returning buyers separately.
  3. Use the same creatives in both campaigns. Otherwise you are testing ads, not campaign types.
  4. Split the budget instead of moving all of it. Keep the manual campaign running while the automated one learns.
  5. Don’t touch either campaign for at least 2-3 weeks. Budget changes and creative swaps can restart learning. See which edits trigger a Meta learning phase reset.
  6. Judge on your shop’s own data: new customers, revenue and MER for the test period, compared with the same weeks before. Use Ads Manager as a second source, not the first.

What I see in the accounts I run

I have launched 500+ campaigns. The pattern that misleads owners most often goes like this: you add an Advantage+ campaign next to an existing manual setup, and it quickly shows the best ROAS in the account. When I open the shop data, a large share of those purchases comes from people who already knew the brand: past buyers, newsletter subscribers, visitors from last week. The reported return looks excellent, but the number of new customers barely moves.

The fix is not to switch automation off. Separate existing customers in reporting, compare new customer counts in the shop data, and keep any manual retargeting small and deliberate, so you know what each part is doing.

The second thing I see: when an automated campaign stops working, the cause is usually too few creatives, not the campaign type. Three ads run for two months, frequency climbs, cost per purchase follows, and the owner blames Advantage+. In a market the size of Slovakia or Czechia this happens sooner than in a large country, because the system runs out of new people faster.

When manual campaigns are the better choice

  • Lead generation that needs qualification. In B2B and services, automation finds the cheapest form fills, not the best customers. Unless you send lead quality back to Meta, your own audiences and stricter forms protect quality.
  • Products with very different margins. Automation pushes what sells easily, not what earns the most. Separate campaigns let you cap spend on low-margin products.
  • Budgets set per country. If each market has its own budget, entity or distributor, you need campaigns you can split and report by country.
  • Low conversion volume. Divide your weekly budget by your target CPA (cost per acquisition). Say you spend €30 a day with a €20 target: €210 / €20 is about 10 purchases a week. That is little signal for any setup. Use one simple campaign rather than several ad sets competing for the same data.

Most common mistakes

  • Comparing an automated campaign with fresh creatives against a manual one running old ads.
  • Judging after 3-4 days and switching back.
  • Sending purchase values that include VAT and shipping. This makes ROAS look better in every setup and hides margin problems.
  • Running automated prospecting and manual retargeting side by side, then adding up the revenue both report as if there were no overlap.
  • Expecting automation to fix a weak offer or a slow website. If the product page does not convert, no campaign type will.

What should you do first?

Start with tracking and a steady supply of creatives, because both setups depend on them. Then fill in the table above honestly and run a split test for at least 2-3 weeks, judged on new customers and MER.

FAQ

Is Advantage+ better than manual campaigns?

Not by default. It works best when you have a large catalogue, a steady supply of new creatives and enough purchases every week. With one product, few conversions or strict reporting needs, manual campaigns usually give you more control.

Can I run Advantage+ and manual campaigns at the same time?

Yes, and it is the setup I use most often. Keep manual retargeting small, separate existing customers in reporting, and judge the total on your shop revenue and MER.

How long should an Advantage+ test run?

At least 2-3 weeks without major edits, and longer if you get only a few purchases a week. Budget changes and creative swaps during the test can restart learning and make the comparison unreliable.

Why does Advantage+ show high ROAS when my sales did not grow?

It often reaches past buyers and people who were already about to buy. Compare new and returning customers in your shop data and watch MER, not only ROAS in Ads Manager.

Do I need the Conversions API for Advantage+?

It is not strictly required, but automation can only decide based on the data you send. In the EU, consent banners block many browser events, so server-side events deduplicated with the Pixel give the system a more complete picture.

Does Advantage+ suit lead generation?

It can bring many cheap leads, but without feedback on lead quality it optimises for volume, not good customers. For B2B and services that need qualification, manual audiences and stricter forms are usually safer.
